Steel River

Logo design for a local gin brand based in Middlesbrough, influenced by the heritage of the local area

Brief

The task is to create a new logo for a local, independent gin distillery. The logo should be unique to the area of Teesside, featuring local landmarks and references to the area's industrial past. The company will initially produce gin but aims to add greater product variety in the future.

Approach

I developed several layouts featuring local landmarks, such as the Transporter Bridge and Roseberry Topping. These icons would sit in a shield design that could be applied across several products. The typography would also be influenced by the town's history.

Design and development

After choosing the preferred route, I further refined the logo and layout, adding small details such as rivets and a ship as a callback to the town's industrial shipbuilding past.

The final logo will be embossed onto the bottle to give it a metallic look, coupled with the dark gin color, which will enable the logo to stand out.
